Many patients struggle to find ways to reduce the swelling in their arms and legs. They seek out their doctor’s care. Their doctor may prescribe a diuretic or “water pill”, but this typically does not do anything more than make you have to race to the bathroom frequently! What else can be done?
Certified Lymphedema Therapists are becoming more and more common across the country; although sometimes we are still hard to find in more rural areas. We are trained to provide treatment specific to your type of swelling; whether you recently had a mastectomy or have poor circulation in your legs. The typical treatment for a patient with chronic swelling consists of:
- Manual Lymph Drainage – a gentle massage disigned to target your specific problem regions; very gentle, yet effective.
- Compression Wrapping – bandages are applied to the effected limb to help re-circulate the fluid through the body.
- Self Care and Hygiene assessment and program – proper care and hygiene is extremely important for a patient with chronic swelling.
- Custom compression garment fitting – each patient is measured for their stockings or arm sleeve and each garment is ordered for the specific person’s needs. Each patient is educated on wear, precautions, and assured that they can put on and take off the garment by themselves (or with the assist of a caregiver if needed).
This type of treatment is extemely beneficial if performed consistently and with good patient compliance. You may be seen for therapy 2-5 times per week depending upon the severity of your condition. It is well worth it!
