If there is one thing that holds true when comparing athletes by gender; it is the percentage of injuries each suffer within their sport. Female athletes are actually 2 to 10 times more likely to sustain a knee ligament injury, such as torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), compared to male athletes. There are various factors behind a female’s increased risk, but the most evident is the anatomy of their bodies. Compared to males, females have a wider pelvis bone, meaning the angle where the femur attaches to the tibia increases. The steeper the angle, the more inward/outward rotation occurs in the knees and spreading out of the legs. Alone, this movement places excess stress on the ACL, causing a knock-kneed stance. Other factors that may explain this statistic include the female’s biomechanics and movement patterns, neuromuscular factors, muscular fatigue, and hormones. Though an ACL injury affects numerous females at some point in their career, with certain components, these women can get back to the sports they love. In order to successfully recover, all that is needed are proper rehabilitation treatments, a motivating physical therapist and self-determination. Personally, I can testify for this statement after suffering an ACL injury about 7 years ago.
During my time in physical therapy, I was taught the value of being repetitive in order to see results from my major setback. In addition, it was the devotion of my therapist that made this recovery the road to my success. Her endless drill sergeant routines demonstrated how passionate, committed and enthusiastic she was to see my response to such a devastating incident. Her innate gift was extremely admirable because she persuaded me to focus on those rigorous stretches and exercises in order to heal quickly. While working with the therapist, I gained the confidence I needed to return to playing basketball. Eventually, I was able to live out my goal of playing on the collegiate level. I give all the credit to a therapist that never gave up on me. At Hohman Rehab, I see each staff member portray those same characteristics I adored in my therapist. Each individual, from the therapist to the receptionist, show their commitment to the patients by motivating each patient to reach their highest potential. Our goal is to provide assistance in order to ensure a quick recovery in a comfortable and friendly environment. Therefore, I highly recommend Hohman Rehab as the first option to your road to recovery, you won’t regret it! (written by Breanna Fields)
