Sometimes back pain isn’t actually “back pain” at all. If your pain is located more on one side, for example in one of the “dimples in your lower back”, or if you are having increased pain while sitting, you might have SI joint pain.
The SI joint, otherwise known as the Sacroiliac Joint, is the articulation of your hip bones with the sacrum. Just like any other joint, this joint can get moved, shifted out of place, or strained. Falls onto your buttocks, excessive/improper swing during sports, sexual positions, pregnancy/childbirth, abberant postures during standing, and motor vehicle accidents, can all account for an SI joint dysfunction.
A physical therapist is trained to examine and provoke/relieve symptoms to determine if your SI joint is the problem area. After specific tests and measures are performed your therapist will begin to correct the impairment with specific exercises, joint or soft tissue mobilizations and/or stabilization techniques, including an SI belt, to decrease your pain.
