Total knee replacements are utilized with patients suffering from the pain of osteoarthritis, RA and occasionally fractures from a traumatic injury. The procedure is invasive and requires inserting metal parts into the body and resurfacing damaged bone.
Candidates for total knee replacements typically have constant knee pain, joint deformity, moderate swelling and failure to benefit from alternative treatments like physical therapy, cortisone injections, lubricating injections, and anti-inflammatories.
Following surgery, patients benefit from extensive physical therapy, typically starting in the hospital with a passive movement machine, then in the home, and finally outpatient therapy. Initially treatment focuses on regaining knee bending and straightening and progresses to strengthening the knee joint. Patients are trained in proper walking technique as their pattern may change after surgery due to pain.
