BPPV stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. This is a condition of the inner ear that causes a dizzy feeling with moving your head and neck into different positions. Within your inner ear are canals that contain crystals; if these crystals become dislodged they can cause the feeling of moving, even if stationary. This condition could be caused by many things, usually some sort of blow to the head or inner ear. Symptoms include:
- Spinning feeling
- Blurred vision
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abnormal rhythmic eye movements (nystagmus)
A doctor may refer you to physical therapy for treatment. Both the tests and treatment focus on performing specific movements to help the crystals in your inner ear move back into place called canalith repositioning maneuvers. These treatments may be effective in as little as 2 sessions!
