Hohman Rehab operates on a very unique principle I had not been exposed to prior to starting here. But I have been absolutely thrilled since coming on board a few years back! We actually have a team of multiple types of professionals working together to analyze cases once evaluated. Our staff has, of course, physical therapists, but also massage therapists, physical therapy assistants, and athletic trainers working hand in hand throughout the process! But why? We’re a physical therapy clinic, wouldn’t this be easier with just physical therapists? Honestly? Now that I’ve been exposed, absolutely not.
Every single one of us has different areas of expertise from our schools and experiences. I think that 100% shows in how we look at difference cases. The majority of my time in school as a physical therapist was spent on diagnostics and physical science, how do I figure out what is happening to you and why. This, of course, has a lot of utility as I really cannot treat as well if I don’t know what I’m treating. It also leaves a lot less time for intervention. Physical therapy school just does not always have the time to teach us the finer points of long term treatment! Many of us will take extra coursework afterwards to learn this, but we will often go down divergent paths focusing on treatments for manual therapy, sport conditioning, neuro-rehab, and hand therapy. Because of that we still might be missing large pieces of the puzzle for you.
Various Employee Backgrounds
This is where the team we have here just blows me out of the water. In school we get just a few weeks of manual therapy unless you took extra coursework later, but our massage therapists? This is LITERALLY what they went to school for!! If what your case needs is hands on tissue, our massage therapists have a HUGE pool of knowledge to know where to go and how to get there!
Baseline treatment progression? You better bet that’s the main job of the physical therapy assistant program! Their coursework and course load allows PTAs to focus down on monitoring progression and advance interventions. And I would dare say that many PTAs I’ve worked with start with a better knowledge base in this than many of our PT colleagues. Again, that is not to say that many PTs do not do the extra legwork to learn this too! But rather, it’s not a definitive part of our entry level programs.
And if you want to get back to high level activity and sport? Bring on the Athletic Trainers! Athletic conditioning is a beast unto itself. A normal entry level PT program does not have the time to tackle the animal unless you were nerdy like me and took the extra electives! But guess what? Our team has plenty of expertise to go around for this!
This is not to disparage the program I went to! I was prepared for exactly what my program was designed for, and there have been great courses for me along the way to continue to build my own skill set in these areas and more! But, along that way I’ve also had teammates to help teach me and make me a better practitioner!
Added Benefits of Hohman Rehab
Plus, with all these experts under one roof, our clinic offers the opportunity to keep a session 1 on 1! That means not only have multiple eyes looked at your case to refine the how and the why of your program, but now you have some of those eyes focused right as you work to make sure everything is monitored closely!
Not a bad system at all, right?!
Contact us if you’re needing physical therapy!! Our team does not disappoint!!
